Siebe ten Cate (1858-1908) was a Dutch artist known for his impressionistic landscapes and cityscapes. He was born in Sneek, Friesland and studied at the Rijksacademie of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, among others.

Ten Cate was a travel-loving artist who traveled to Switzerland, France, England, Scandinavia and North Africa. Early in his career, he traveled to Paris, where he met the French artists of his time. He was friends with Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro and Vincent van Gogh and he also shared his house and studio with Kees van Dongen for several months. He visited Lucerne, where he was inspired by the beautiful nature and lakes, including Lake Lucerne. Hamburg was also one of his favorite destinations.

During his travels, he created many pastels. He often used soft pastels in his works, which he applied in a thin layer on a coarse type of paper. Through this technique, he was able to depict subtle nuances in color and light, greatly contributing to the atmosphere of his works. A style feature of Ten Cate is his impressionistic technique, resulting in a subtle haziness, a kind of aura, that is visible in almost all of his works. He also created etchings and lithographs.

His travels had a great impact on his art. He often used elements that he had seen and experienced in his works, such as architecture and nature. Together with his distinctive style, this makes his works unique and recognizable.

Ten Cate was a productive artist and had great success during his life. He regularly exhibited in the Netherlands and abroad, including the prestigious Salons in Paris.

Unfortunately, Ten Cate died prematurely in 1908 in Paris.

After his death, he was forgotten in the Netherlands. However, this is no longer the case today. His work is highly sought after by collectors and fetches high prices at auctions. His work is part of important museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, but also the Musée Carnavalet and the Louvre in Paris. In 2012, a retrospective exhibition took place at the Fries Scheepvaart Museum. Since 2020, a foundation has been established to promote the artist both domestically and abroad through the conduct of art historical research, the online publication of information, and the organization of exhibitions.
