He regularly used his Amsterdam publishing office as a venue for sales exhibitions. Active in progressive socialist circles, he came into contact with Nola Hatterman through these networks.

In good condition.

Additional Information:
Nola Hatterman, known for her bold and socially engaged depictions of Suriname, often used correction fluid (Typex) to refine her drawings, a technique clearly visible in her illustrations for De vrijheid gaat in 't rood gekleed (Freedom Wears Red), a 1945 anti-colonial novel by communist writer Theun de Vries. Set in Guadeloupe, the book explores the social and political struggles of the island’s native population. It was published by Goulooze, with Hatterman's illustrations serving as the basis for the cover design.

Nola Hatterman was a Dutch actress, painter, and designer who became involved in progressive Surinamese circles in the Netherlands during the 1930s, forming connections with figures such as Anton de Kom. In 1953, she relocated to Suriname to teach a new generation of Surinamese artists. Central to her work is the exploration of Surinamese identity. She viewed art as a weapon in the fight against discrimination and colonialism. After her passing in 1984, her former students established the Nola Hatterman Institute, later renamed the Nola Hatterman Art Academy.

As an artist, Hatterman embodies the shared (post)colonial heritage of Suriname and the Netherlands, serving as a pivotal figure in both countries’ art histories.

Her work has recently been acquired by institutions including the Kunstmuseum Den Haag and is part of the permanent collection of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
