Martinus van Regteren Altena (1866-1908) trained as an architect but chose to pursue painting after earning his engineering diploma in 1892. Coming from an artistic family, he studied at the Rijksacademie and became a member of Arti et Amicitiae. His realistic style encompassed landscapes, figures, portraits, and interiors. After several travels abroad, including to Paris in 1897, he settled in Laren and later Bussum, with guidance from Jan Veth. Due to tuberculosis, he moved to Nunspeet in 1907, where he died in 1908 at the age of 42. His sister Marie, an 'Amsterdamse Joffer', was also a painter. Van Regteren Altena’s short but productive career included various exhibitions until illness forced him to cease painting. His works are now housed in the Drents Museum and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
