A graceful and characterful portrait, in which technique and expression come together in harmonious balance.
This sensitive pencil drawing by Marie de Jonge depicts a woman in profile, captured in a restrained yet powerful pose. With refined linework and subtle shading, De Jonge succeeds not only in rendering the sitter’s outward appearance with precision, but also in offering a glimpse into her inner world.
The interplay of light and shadow creates a pleasing sense of depth and texture, visible in both the facial features and the carefully executed folds of the clothing. The work breathes the spirit of the academic tradition, yet reveals a striking directness and honesty.
Marie de Jonge received her artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and continued her studies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where she was taught by, among others, Nicolaas van der Waay.
