The Dutch Impressionist Siebe Johannes ten Cate (1858–1908) was born in Sneek and moved to Paris at a young age. There, he moved freely within the international artistic milieu, circulating in the circle of Alfred Sisley and Camille Pissarro, in contact with Vincent van Gogh, who also mentioned him in his letters, and for a time sharing a studio with Kees van Dongen near Place de la République.

Ten Cate was deeply restless and widely travelled, working across Europe and North Africa. His subjects ranged from Swiss lakes and Scandinavian landscapes to the vibrant nightlife of Paris and the harbour of Algiers. His pastels capture the fleeting moment of modern life.

His work can be found in the collections of the Rijksmuseum, the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay, among others. In 2025, the RKD and the Siebe ten Cate Foundation published an online catalogue raisonné and are working on two exhibition projects. Thanks to its efforts, the book Siebe ten Cate. Een vergeten kunstenaar in Parijs was published in 2026.

Bob Scholte Fine Art specialises in Siebe Johannes ten Cate and regularly offers a selection of original pastels, paintings, and drawings.
