Information:
Thomas Woodward was a painter of historical genre pieces and portraits where horses often took center stage. Beloved by the English nobility, he quickly gained recognition in high society, allowing him to create horse portraits of the British Royal family, including Queen Victoria. During his lifetime, his works were frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution. His pieces are represented in institutions such as Tate Britain and the Worcester City Museum.
The Yale Center for British Art in New Haven (USA) holds a painting featuring the same two horses in a similar composition (coll.nr. B1981.25.693). It is likely that these two paintings were painted one after the other
