Originating from a private collection, this artwork was acquired from Frans Buffa & Zonen in the 1890s.

 

Jan Voerman Sr. was a prominent Dutch artist who gained recognition for his landscapes and cityscapes of Hattem.

 

Voerman's painting style is characterized by masterful control of color and light. His brushstrokes are lively and expressive, imbuing his landscapes with a sense of movement and vitality. Voerman's use of light and shadow creates depth and lends an atmospheric quality to his paintings, as exemplified by the above watercolor.

The subjects of Voerman's paintings and works on paper range from serene river views to city scenes. He captured the essence of each subject and brought them to life. His landscapes demonstrate a deep understanding of the natural environment, with particular attention to the atmosphere and character of each landscape.
