Siebe ten Cate (1858-1908) was a Dutch artist known for his Impressionist landscapes and cityscapes. Born in Sneek, Friesland, Siebe lost both of his parents at a young age. Thanks to the family capital he inherited, he was able to move to Paris at the age of 22, after completing his studies at the Rijksacademie in The Hague and later in Antwerp. After settling permanently in the City of Light, he befriended greats such as Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley, shared a studio with Kees van Dongen, and met Vincent van Gogh, who mentioned him in his letters.

Siebe was a productive artist who regularly exhibited both in the Netherlands and abroad, including at the prestigious Paris Salon. Although his permanent residence was in the cultural heart of Europe, he traveled extensively. His curiosity took him to Switzerland, Spain, Belgium, England, Scandinavia, Germany, and even North Africa.

Siebe's oeuvre balances between two worlds: the serene beauty of nature and the bustling life of the city. The landscapes and architecture of the places he visited play a prominent role in his work—from the Vierwaldstättersee in Switzerland and the forests around Zwolle to the lively markets of Seville, the Parisian nightlife, and the activity along the Thames in London. All his works are characterized by a subtle haziness, a dreamy veil that floats as a recognizable element throughout his entire oeuvre. In addition to paintings and pastels, he also created several etchings and lithographs.

Although Siebe ten Cate is not yet widely known to the public, this does not diminish the quality of his work. His paintings are part of collections in prestigious museums such as the Rijksmuseum, the Louvre, and the Musée d'Orsay. Since 2020, the Siebe ten Cate Foundation has been dedicated to the revaluation of this artist. In the first quarter of 2025, an extensive RKD study and oeuvre catalog will be published, including essays on his life, artistic network, and travels. A first step to putting his name back on the map was taken in 2012 with a retrospective exhibition at the Fries Scheepvaartmuseum. Additionally, the foundation is working on two new exhibitions, one in the Netherlands and one in France.
